How Do You Get to Izu Oshima by Jet Ferry, Large Ship and Plane?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Izu Oshima, the largest of the Izu Islands, from Tokyo, and who need to choose between the jet ferry, the overnight ship and the small plane. It also covers two notices from the ferry company that were posted when we checked, because they affect trips this month.
We used the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's tourism accessibility guide, the Oshima Tourism Association, the ferry company Tokai Kisen and the island information site Oshima Navi. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Sailings and flights change with the weather. We name no hotels or restaurants and left out phone numbers.
The three ways to cross
The Tokyo government's guide says there are two ways to reach Oshima, by sea and by air.
- High-speed jet ferry: 1 hour 45 minutes from the Takeshiba Passenger Ship Terminal in Tokyo, run by Tokai Kisen.
- Large passenger ship: about 8 hours from Tokyo, run by the same company. Its page lists two large ships, Tachibana-Maru and Salvia-Maru.
- Plane: 25 minutes from Chofu Aerodrome in a 19-seat propeller plane, run by New Central Airservice.
The Oshima Navi site says the trip takes as little as 1 hour 45 minutes by ship from central Tokyo, and the island lies about 120 km south of Tokyo. For fares and times, the Tokyo government's page sends you to the Tokai Kisen and New Central Airservice sites.
Two ports on the island
Oshima Navi warns that the island has two ports, Okata and Motomachi, and that the company uses one or the other depending on the weather that day. Check "today's operation status" on the Tokai Kisen site, or call the company, to learn which port your ship will use. The site also says that a separate dedicated phone line announces whether the jet ferry from Tokyo is running or cancelled, from 6:00 to 8:00.
Access for people with limited mobility
The Tokyo government says Takeshiba terminal, Chofu Aerodrome, Okata and Motomachi ports, the passenger waiting room and Oshima Airport are all barrier-free. Of the four jet ferries, only the Seven Island Yui has wheelchair-accessible toilets and a stair lift, and it has 10 barrier-free seats. The page's data were current as of January 2026.
Notices from Tokai Kisen as of 4 October 2026
The Tokai Kisen site carried two notices that matter for October trips. Please read them in full on the company's site, because they change quickly.
- Typhoon No. 27. A notice timed 17:00 on 4 October 2026 says the typhoon is affecting sailings. The Tokyo 22:30 departure for Miyake and Mikura islands would sail but might not be able to dock, and the Tokyo 22:30 departure to Hachijo was cancelled. If the ship can reach Miyake and Mikura, it will stop at Oshima as an extra call on its way back to Tokyo, arriving there at 19:00. A decision about the jet ferry on Monday 5 October was to be made at 6:00 that morning.
- Vessel suspension. The company says the Kanto Transport Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism ordered a suspension of some of its vessels. Substitute service runs from the night departure of 8 October, for the period from 9 October to 28 October 2026, using two other ships with second-class passenger fares. The company says it will contact booked customers by phone or text message with new departure times. The detailed timetable is in a PDF on its site.
The company also says it is not charging change or cancellation fees for now. This applies to departures from the Tokyo night sailing on 31 August 2026 until further notice. Internet bookings can be changed by yourself up to the day before departure. If you booked through a travel agent, the agent's rules may differ.
Money and supplies before you go
Oshima Navi says the island has no convenience stores, that supermarkets and shops close early and that pharmacies are few, so bring regular medicine and travel sickness tablets. It also says many shops still prefer cash, that phone reception is poor in places and that a mobile battery helps. Bring a jacket, because the summit of Mt. Mihara is cool. Our guide to getting around Izu Oshima has more.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Fares for the jet ferry, the large ship and the plane.
- Whether the substitute timetable includes Oshima on your date.
- Flight schedules from Chofu.
